Content Website Redesign

Module: Visual Design Basics | Level: Medium | Estimated Time: 2 days
Skills: Layout, Visual Hierarchy, Typography

How can designers make high volumes of text readable? Enter grid layouts, which organize content-rich websites (like online publications) into well-spaced blocks and columns. A balanced grid layout allows users to easily navigate content—and looks great doing so.

In this brief, you’ll redesign a content website with a new grid layout. Consider how to craft a strong information hierarchy—prioritize important content and make it easy for users to quickly parse. Use ample white space and keep the spacing, typography, and image elements consistent.

Begin by studying similar successful websites and speed sketching ways to organize your chosen website. Don’t be afraid to break the grid pattern to emphasize certain elements and create visual interest.

Choose a content website (e.g., The New York Times, Gizmodo, Apartment Therapy) and redesign it with a different grid layout.
